Have you ever just wished that you could sit down for coffee with someone who is a social media expert and just have them open up their phone and just be like, hey, can I see your analytics, your recent posts that have worked well for you? Can you just literally pull up the back end of your social media and walk me through what you're doing? Like, can I see your process? Well, that's exactly what we're going to do in today's podcast episode. Hi, and welcome back to the Power Table Podcast. I'm your host, Taylor Smith, and I have a special guest today, my dear friend and social media and visibility expert, Michelle Thames. Michelle is an entrepreneur, a speaker, an event host, and community builder who helps women turn visibility into real opportunities. After being fired from her job in 2016 in healthcare, she leaned into the online platform she had been building, which originally started with a blog and went on to build multiple successful businesses. Michelle is the host of the top-ranked podcast, Social Media Decoded, as well as an event and a community where she helped entrepreneurs build powerful relationships, grow their visibility, and monetize their expertise. And in this episode, I did not give her any information in advance. I truly asked her to just pull up her phone and say, hey, what are you doing right now that's building your authority, that's increasing your visibility, and that's working specifically on social media? And we touch on a little bit about all the places Michelle is showing up, what's working on Facebook and LinkedIn, how she's building authority on threads, and what happened with her most recent reel that went viral and how she used ChatGPT to help her get there. If you've been seeking out some real talk around what's working on social right now, you will walk away with a lot from this conversation. So let's get into it. Hey Michelle, welcome to the Power Table Podcast. Thank you for having me. I'm so excited to be here today. I'm so excited for this conversation because, first of all, I assume that most of our podcast listeners know who you are at this point because you and I have done several collaborations. I was on your podcast. You were a speaker at Power Table Live last year. You're coming back to speak at Power Table Live this year. Like I feel like people should just know who you are at this point. But in case they don't, um I'm so grateful for you to be here. Like you're such an incredible friend of mine, Michelle. And for those of you listening, um, what you don't know about Michelle is that she is a visibility, personal branding, and social media expert. She's a top podcast host. You just, I mean, when I think of someone who really sets the bar high in so many areas, events, podcasting, social media, it's you, Michelle. Oh, thank you. No, I really appreciate that.
SPEAKER_01I've been, as you know, at this a long time. I've pivoted a lot of different times, and I'm just really feeling very aligned in the space that I am in in this time. So many people, you know, who listening, they may know of me or may have heard of me, but I'm really in this like space right now where I feel super aligned with my messaging and like where I'm really going with my business. So this is like a great time for us to be talking, I think.
SPEAKER_00That's a sweet spot. And so if you're listening to this and you're like, yeah, I wish I was there, like one, don't feel bad because we all go through that more than once, where it's like it feels off, it doesn't feel fully aligned. And this will be my encouragement like, come to Power Table Live because we will be in a room of all of these other people who can really help you with that alignment and get to learn from people who are on the other side of it and see how they show up and see how they're focused and ask them questions. And so I'm just gonna jump right into the podcast today because for those of you listening, I didn't tell Michelle what we were gonna talk about, which I usually do. I prep my podcast guests, I'm like, hey, here's the theme, here's the episode. But Michelle is such an OG and such a pro that I literally said, can I just come on and throw this at you? So, Michelle, are you ready?
SPEAKER_01I'm ready. Let's do it. Let's do it.
SPEAKER_00All right, so what I want to know is like, we're gonna get into this in a second, but like, if you were to open up your phone and tell me this is what's working on social media right now, this is how I'm positioning myself as an authority, these are the things I'm doing, here's the platforms I'm on. Like, I just want this to be raw and real. So everyone prep yourselves because that's where we're going. We're gonna get super scrappy and tactical with this. But actually, let's even back up a step further. So um, hold on if you're listening, we're gonna get to that part, including as we were just talking before we hit record. Michelle just had a reel that went viral um within the last 24 hours. So we're gonna get to all of that. But actually, let's just start with what do you think is most important for people to know right now about the state of social media and visibility? Everyone says, be an authority online. What do you think is most important for people to realize right now?
SPEAKER_01I think what's important to realize right now is being really clear on your positioning. I don't think this is a time to be like, well, I kind of do everything. Coming from someone who was once known to do everything, and I thought that that was okay, actually, it can hinder you. So I do think that being super clear on who you are is working right now. I mean, I know myself included, I've changed my Instagram bio like 72 times, but I think now it really fits and it lands. I think being super clear on who you are, your positioning is really working right now. I think the second thing is I've been hearing this word and you have too, and you kind of touched us this in some of your episodes, but this whole thing that we're in a trust recession, right? And I think if you are somebody who builds community and who has been building that on these channels, you won't have a hard time to convert. The people that are gonna have a hard time converting clients right now in this 2026 age we're in is people who have not built a solid foundation on social media when it comes to your clients, when it comes to your community. People no longer want to just do one-off things, they want to feel included in something. So if you can make people feel included in something, I think that's what's working. So that's what I have been doing. I've been online for 17 years building community in the beginning. And so I brought people along the journey, and I don't feel like they've been lost because even if I pivoted or wavered, they've been along the journey and I've been sharing that. So building community is important. It's not just about post and content, it's about are you a good person? Let's be honest. Like, are you actually being someone who is providing really good value? And when I say value, can people use the things that you are posting about? Can they share this? That's important. So that's the second thing. And I think the third thing is too, a lot of us are perfectionists and we're just posting and we're waiting to post the content until it's perfect. What's really working right now is just you being your true authentic self and you showing up as that authority. It doesn't look like you saying, three tips for you to start your business today. No one is going to listen to that. They're gonna scroll past. That's not the type of content that's performing well. The type of content that's performing well is you actually showcasing who you are and what you do, yes, in real time, not three weeks from now. So I think we need to be super intentional about doing more in real time content, meaning maybe it's two days ago, but you're posting that content right away because if you continue to hold on to it, it's going to get farther away from being in alignment with what's going on today. So I think those are the biggest three things that I'm seeing. Like if I'm opening my phone, what's working, I'm seeing brands, you know, they're tapping into the community, they're having more events, they're being connected to the actual audience and people.
SPEAKER_00So good. I really liked also what you said at the end about recency of like, you gotta post this right now. Uh, and I feel like I could just hammer down on that the power and authority and influence your content has. I think I'll go out on a limb and say it decreases the further away you get from the thing that happened. And just to give you guys some examples, let's say like you won an award for your business or you went to an event and you want to recap the event, or you had a lunch, or you offered a new service. Like we, yes, there's value in content repurposing, but like we're not even talking about getting to that point. Where like if you don't post this right now, I would say within like 24 to 48 hours, the first week, it has less and less influence. So you're actually working against yourself the longer that you procrastinate to post something. Because we just live in a world where we have all this other content from all of these other people, right? And so I think like making letting people feel like, as you said, they're a part of that journey. And recency, I think, is a part of making them feel like they're alongside you.
SPEAKER_01It's big. And like you open up your phone every day and you're seeing all these trends and things like trends are good to hop on too, right? But I think, like you said, we need to actually live in this time right now, and we can't we can't afford to post the content two weeks from now. No one, they're not gonna be interested in your event that you just hosted if you wait three weeks to post about it. You have to post about it now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Okay, I think that was a great place to start of like, here's what you need to know in 2026, because I don't think there's probably a person listening to this podcast that isn't like already social media like acclimated. They're just kind of like, all right, I know how to make the content, but like tell me what really is working for you right now. So let's get into the nitty gritty that I know everyone is like waiting to hear as they're listening to this episode. Uh so can maybe let's just start first with Instagram. Like, can we share a little bit about that reel that went viral? And like, if you want to one, describe the real and two, describe maybe some takeaways or things that you think worked because we're in a world where going viral is not easy anymore, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, it's not. And it's a it's a science, to be honest. Like every post that you post, please know that this is I don't get a lot of viral posts. So this is like very few and far between. Okay, this is possible, but also it's like just not something that happens on a consistent basis. So I will start in saying, I have felt that my Instagram has been stagnant. So as I am doing this podcast episode, I feel I am in an upward trajectory of followers and reach. And I think because I was feeling so stagnant is because, like I was telling you earlier, I was in that space of let's do the three XYZ. Like I just had my mindset for that for the last few years. But in the last two years, I've really opened my eyes to what type of content performs well and like what my people want to see. So, and Taylor knows this. So I've recently decided that I wanted to focus more on the South Suburban Chicago area. So if you're listening to this, you may always hear Chicago, Chicago, Chicago. Technically, I don't live in Chicago proper, right? But I do live in a space called Cook County, which Chicago is part of Cook County, Illinois. And I stay in a suburb that is like 30 minutes away from Chicago, and it's called the Chicago South Suburbs. There's a conglomerate of different areas, and it's called the Chicago South Suburbs. And I said, you know what? This area doesn't get a lot of very good visibility on social media, and I want to be the person to start to showcase this. So before I tell you about the reel, I have to tell you kind of like the process. I posted a reel that was about my community. And that reel did typically good. It reached about 2,000 people, got a lot of comments and feedback. Posted that on Instagram, got a lot of feedback. Posted on threads, got a lot of feedback. And so I was like, huh, I think I have something here. And so I decided to go around to different businesses in my community that I wanted to highlight and leverage my platform, which I consider a media platform. I consider myself now a media platform. I want to showcase and increase others' visibility as well as my own. So this is only gonna help me. And I think this is the direction that is going to help that upward trajectory. And so I've been seeing this business on Facebook and they're like popping up in my feed, and I'm like, a farm. So it's a farm, it's called Kakadoodle. And they are a local farm in my area that has fresh produce, fresh meat, eggs. They have a farm, right? And so I'm like, huh, I should go check that out. So I actually replied to one of their posts and they were like, oh, we're open from 10 to 2. Come by because I told them I wanted to interview them. And so I took it right upon myself not to wait on this opportunity because you might wait and say, Oh, I'll go next week. I did it right then and there because it's literally five minutes away from me. Got my daughter and husband in the car, and I said, Let's do this. On my way there, I actually came up with a strategy. I didn't have the strategy before I came up, but I used my trusty friend chat. Now you may use chat, Gemini, whatever. We're not gonna debate. I used my trusty AI friend to help me with a layout. I said, What? I said, This is the business. This is what they do. I took a screenshot of their Facebook and put it into chat and said, I'm highlighting local businesses. Give me a reel that is going to go viral. I need step by step, I need a shot list, I need everything I need to get. And so before going there, I got the shot list. I got all the shots that I was gonna get. And then, you know, we shopped with the local business and we went home. That was that was Saturday. This is we're recording this on Tuesday, and I posted it on Monday. I said, I can't wait for this because I think that this is gonna be a viral reel. I have to put it together. And so after I sat down and just looked at what I had, I asked Chad again, how do I put this in a format so that it goes viral? And so it gave me step by step what I should put on the screen and everything. And I'm saying that because sometimes you may have roadblocks to really think about what's gonna go viral. And I needed a thought partner. So I had the idea. Chat did not give me the idea, right? I just went to the platform with my idea with a structure. And yeah, I posted the reel yesterday at about eight. I went to bed last night, it was at like 9,000. I woke up today, it was like at 20. And now it's almost at 30 something thousand views, hundreds of comments, hundreds of shares. But what is really particular about this reel is it is like showcasing a hidden gem. I think the reason why it has so many comments, saves, and reshares is because it's valuable. I'm showcasing something to people who drive past this every day. The beginning of the video says, I've driven past here for years, but never stopped. And like people are like, what do you mean? Why'd you drive past? What are you, what are you talking about? So that's curiosity. They're they're curious, right? And then I'm giving them, you know, a background on what the place is. I let the owners talk and speak. I have that in there. And I think that really is intentional too, because now you know what the place is about, right? And so then I'm sharing, you know, they can come here on the weekends and people are in the comments like, I had no clue. I drive past this every day. Wow, thank you for sharing this. This is very helpful. I'm gonna go on Saturday. So learning that this is really valuable information. And so just a takeaway from that is that I really took away is that it's a valuable piece of content because I'm sharing a hidden gym in my area and I'm acting as like a reporter journalist because I'm interviewing the person. I have my microphone, which is also another thing. I know you all see how people are using many microphones. So I said, I know that'll be a hit because number one, they'll understand that the sound is gonna be clear. So they're probably gonna watch it more. So it's it's it's many things that go into a viral reel that I thought about and actually was intentional about this, and it worked in my favor. But I want to preface all this and say, I believe the reason why it did work is because I am someone who is already influential in this community. I've already built the community, I've already built the following and authority and audience. And so it just took it to a different level. So that was my viral reel. It's still going viral, and I'm just riding the wave of this momentum.
SPEAKER_00I love that. And I know you told me you had um a lot of followers come from this reel as well. 200. So I kind of want to put together like, how does this what is the value for someone who's maybe running an online business, they're a coach or service provider. Why should you be leaning into um these types of content that is maybe about another business, about a collaborator, about something local? Because I know the value of this and I feel like I've been preaching it all day long. But I want you to like walk us through, Michelle. Like, you have an online coaching membership, you have a community, it's called the collective. Why focus on these kind of local collaborative reels?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think it's important to like, like you said, someone who's building community. I'm also building community here in my local area. So that's also bringing visibility to what I'm doing. So even if those people are not quote unquote going great for a part of my community, they still see what I'm doing, which can lead to other opportunities. Prime example, I got a DM today from a cookie business who is in this area and they want me to do a video and want me to come and get free cookies and do all this, right? Because they saw that video. So even if you know you're you have a community, you do events, and the people may not be a right fit for that, they could be potential partners, potential collaborators. So if you are someone who is tapping into your local area, you have less competition, to be honest. I feel like now I have less competition because there's so many people focused on Chicago. Like that's always gonna be a part of my content. But it now it's like, well, I'm the person who has events and community in the south suburbs of Chicago. And so that locality, I think, leaning into local content is helping you become, quote unquote, a local influencer, right? And that just increases your chances. You don't have to compete with a larger city. And I know you know this, right? Us being from smaller towns outside of larger towns, that helps us. So I think leaning into local community and leaning into local content is going to help us because there's less competition. So if you are a coach consultant, you have a uh, you know, you do eventually have a community, start to think about if you don't live in a big city, how can you now drum up these people to help you support what you're doing locally? So I feel like now I have such an influx of support. Now no matter what I do, it's probably gonna be sold out because now I have people coming to me. I have an event on Friday and they're like, can I get a ticket? Because like now you see that I'm hosting events and you might not have seen that before. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00So good. I I wanna like add a couple points here because one, like, don't underestimate the value of finding clients locally. Like, we love online for ease, right? For the freedom we can uh have with our business, for the flexibility, the ease of like, I can work with anybody anywhere in the world, but like don't overlook the potential of how many clients are local and how much faster conversion is to sale because they met you, they trusted you, or even if they saw you on social media, but they recognize the setting that you're in. They recognize the other people in the real. You just added a layer of trust that someone else on the internet cannot replicate with your local audience, right? And then also from just a like credibility perspective of like we talk about AI a lot on this podcast. We have that's been kind of a frequent and recurring theme with many of our guest speakers this season. And AI picks up on these things too. And it's very important to recognize AI does not establish trust or truth, it simply assesses how trustworthy you are based on what it can find about you on the internet. So you are going to be perceived as a real human and therefore more trustworthy if you are highly plugged into like a strong local community, or even if you're the one leading it and creating it. And recognizing that people are doing searches with those local keywords too. So they're saying things like, um, for example, you know, what is the best, you know, fertility coach in Los Angeles who has experience with women with this condition? Like they're getting very, very, very specific with their searches. And then I can even say, like, with the power table, we've had like five or six people this year buy their ticket, and in the registration form it says, like, where did you find us? And it they say like ChatGPT recommended it. Like, I looked up best conferences in America to attend for female founders. ChatGPT said I should come to Power Table Live. So recognizing that really being intentional with this documenting in public, tagging your local businesses, like showing up in places where you can build this kind of credibility and association, like this is what authority building looks like. I feel like I mean I'm Michelle, I'm just like so hyped that this is the conversation on the podcast today.
SPEAKER_01No, I am too. And to talk to that to that AI, I love AI. Okay, you all heard me talk about how I use generative AI every single day. But I think what's going to set creators apart is when you can do a video like this and it's you, I think that that video is doing good because it's not AI. It's not AI generated, it's not another person. It is me being an authority and showing up. And I think that helps increase the trust factor because people trust me now, right? They trust me even more because now I'm providing a valuable resource. So I love AI, but I think those of us who will lean into us, okay, because Because you are the brand. And if you follow me, you know that I mean I got it in the mirror in the back. You are the brand, you are the legacy, right? And I think if we continue to show up be and be relatable and authentic, that's gonna outshine these AI generated videos. Nothing against them, let me repeat, nothing against AI generated videos, just me personally, I want to build human trust. And this is the only way that I know how to do that. I actually don't want to have a podcast where it's not me speaking. I genuinely want to connect with people in my human way. So any videos that you see of me, I'm probably almost never gonna be AI generated because I want people to trust me. And I just think that that's my edge in this world of AI. Like I have that edge. I know how to show up on camera, I know how to interview, I know how to connect with people. So I'm just gonna continue to lean into that. And so I think that that is also gonna be a driving factor of my Instagram growth this year. I'm on the road to 40k, you all. I've been stuck in the 30s forever. And today I'm at like 39.2. So I might make it by the end of this week.
SPEAKER_00By the end of this podcast. Who knows? If things get really crazy. Okay, I'm gonna change topics. We've talked about Instagram. I really appreciate your breakdown of like how do you how are you constructing reels and videos right now? And I want to switch and talk about text-based content on specifically threads. Um, but we're also seeing like text-based worked really well in places like LinkedIn and Reddit is like Reddit's popular again, uh, Facebook posts as well. Um, so if you were to like open up your phone right now and tell me what is working in text-based content, what do we got, Michelle?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I love this. Let's talk about LinkedIn first because LinkedIn has been my little secret weapon. I love to share just authority posts on LinkedIn, sharing what I'm actually doing in real time. Again, don't wait on LinkedIn or any of these other platforms too to share. Like if you're speaking, you should have a post of you speaking the next day. Pictures, everything. And so I think that has really been helping me in that area, showcasing my speaking. I've gotten a lot of speaking engagements and opportunities just for my LinkedIn. So that has been working really well. I'm a Facebook girly, okay? I know a lot of people don't like Facebook and they don't think that it works, but I get clients from there every single day. So again, similar to LinkedIn, I post stories on Facebook. I do have a lot of people who maybe follow me who are my family and friends, but years ago, I stopped that and I accept everyone. Um, my page is a professional profile, so you can just follow my page. You don't have to be my friend. And so I share a lot of text-based content with photos, I think do well, really well. But sometimes they're just words. Um, I share a lot of maybe unpopular opinions on Facebook as well. And then moving on to threads, which I know we'll be talking about more at Power Table Live. So if you want to hear a deep analysis, you have to come there. I'm not gonna give you a deep analysis here, but what I will say is that threads is just is that place that you can kind of be unhinged, that you can kind of share your true, honest feedback and really get good engagement. Even the reel that I posted, you can post videos on there, and to my surprise, it's kind of quote unquote viral on threads. I never would have thought that the reel that I had mentioned earlier would be viral on threads, and it is. It's finding those local people. So threads is a great place because it's SEO focused, right? So if you want to share, like we talked about, local community, that's a place to start, right? Really think about the SEO when it comes to what your thread posts are talking about. And people don't want to read paragraphs. I wouldn't do like a long thread. I think those are like maybe a year ago on threads working. I think what really works is just short, straight to the point posts that doesn't have several threads under it. Sometimes, but for me personally, my hitter quitter, I want to like to say my hitter quitter posts that are very short do really well. And I'm just seeing a lot of engagement with local women entrepreneurs and you know, people who are relating to my content. So I think if you're someone who likes to talk and yap, like me, you can really figure out how to share your authority on there. If it's unhinged posts, if it's what happened to you today or what you're looking forward to, um, I think those things are really working on threads. And that's what I think is really working with text-based content right now.
SPEAKER_00Hmm, so good. Yeah, I think that one of the things people don't realize about threads is like how good the algorithm is. And by good, I mean how easy it is for you to control, like compared to other platforms. So, you know, because it's all keyword-based, if you want to see more posts around certain things, start searching those keywords, start making posts of those keywords. It's so much easier, I think, to get that result of like getting involved in specific conversations really quickly on threads compared to other platforms. And in fact, like just a fun fact for the podcast, like that's how Michelle and I met actually, is on threads, and now we talk every single day. Um, and we've spoken at each other's events and we've sent each other partners and sponsors and opportunities just because like we both entered threads and like we're engaging with those same conversations around speaking and community building. Yeah, threads is powerful, and I'm so grateful we're connected as friend. So I know, I know. Okay, so with that, um, do you want to give everyone a little bit of a preview? Don't give away all the goods, but a little bit of a preview of like what you'll be teaching at Power Table Live this year.
SPEAKER_01Yes, a little preview. You have to come, okay. I want to see you in Florida on this beach. It's gonna be beautiful. So I'm going to be sharing how you can position yourself as an authority on threads. Since Taylor has asked me to speak about threads, I have been gathering case studies. Okay, so this is not something that I just saw on social media and I'm gonna present. Everything is lived experience. I honestly, that's the only way I work. I'm not one of those people who say, Yeah, I saw this. You can grow on Instagram, blah, blah, blah. No, I have to share my lived experience because that's just who I am at the core. I want to know that it actually works before I'm sharing anything. So know that everything that I will be sharing at Power Table Live is actual lived experience. So I've been collecting different case studies on different types of posts. Okay, so not just one type of post. I have selling posts. I have posts where I'm asking for feedback. I have posts where I'm reaching out and looking for people. And then not only that, I'm going to be sharing my process on how I follow up with leads and how I keep this loop going in my digital ecosystem because that's important. You can post on threads, but then what are you doing after to really convert the people? Right. So I'm going to be sharing that. And I'm going to be sharing just how it's very low lift and how you can just really show up and be yourself and make this work for you. But I'm going to leave it at that because I think that's juicy enough to give you some really good feedback on what I'm actually going to be sharing. And I hope to see you there. You still have time to get your ticket and join us in April. It's going to be, I'm sure the weather's going to be beautiful.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I mean, it's already 80 degrees and sunny, so it's going to be perfect in just a few short weeks. I cannot wait to see you guys. And you're going to love Michelle's talk. I've had the privilege now of hearing her speak live in person multiple times now. And she's just such an incredible speaker and gives you like exactly word for word what you need to do. Like, there's no gatekeeping here. So I'm so excited for your talk. I know a lot of our attendees are very excited. I've heard when I've asked around, like, what are you most excited about? Everyone's saying, like, some of the workshops I've said were like, I can't wait to learn about threads. So um, I can't wait. It's gonna be so great. Michelle, for our podcast listeners, what do you have going on right now? And where can they connect with you if they want to come say hi or learn more?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so you can connect. I'm always on Instagram, obviously at Michelle L Thames, and I have a lot going on, okay? I have lots of events and things, but I do have an event coming up in November. I know it's very far from November, but we're thinking ahead, okay? So I am going to be praying for my event in November that Taylor will be speaking at. I know we haven't told you all that, but that's just a sneak peek, okay? I'm not gonna reveal the name yet. Taylor knows the name, and she said that it's right on point. I've been doing a lot of just thoughts and things about like what I really want this event to stand for. And so I really think that I've come, like I said, I'm in alignment. Okay, this is my alignment year. Everything is getting in alignment. I think that I'm very much there with the event. Um, I'm speaking. I'm actually speaking tomorrow at my alma mater, so that's really cool. I've been on a speaking tour. Um, and I'm just really excited. That is what I've been tapping into, really showing up and just being present with my daughter. Those who are listening, I do have an 11-year-old going on 12. She'll be 12 in June, and just really being able to be present with her. So that is that's what I've been doing. That's what I have coming up.
SPEAKER_00I I love the name of the event to be revealed, but also you shouldn't have told me, Michelle, because I'm like the worst person at keeping secrets. It is so hard for me. So don't ever like, y'all, don't ask me because I might let it slip. But follow along with Michelle, come to her event in November. I went last year. It was so incredible. Um, would love to see you in Chicago. And you could there's six months in between Power Table Live and Michelle's event. So you can absolutely do both. Um, or go connect with Michelle on social media if you want to learn more from her, as well as listening to her podcast, which is called Social Media Decoded. I'll link that below in the show notes as well. Michelle, thank you so much for coming on the podcast.
SPEAKER_01Yes, thank you for having me, and I hope the listeners enjoyed this fruitful conversation.
